Maria Sakkari halted Bianca Andreescu’s 10-match undefeated record in New York. The Greek won 6-7(2), 7-6(6), 6-3 to progress to her second major quarterfinal of the season. The epic three-hour-and-thirty-minute fight finished at 2:13 am.
Andreescu and Sakkari met for the second time this season. In the spring, the two met in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open. Andreescu won a very demanding 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-6(4) victory. By the victory, Sakkari took revenge on Bianca.
Aside from a couple of pauses, the opening set was all about the serve. Andreescu broke first serve and took a 3-0 lead before Sakkari even things up, breaking at 2-4 to come back on serve. As both women raced into an initial tiebreak. The 18th-seed took the tie-break to advance in the match.
In the second set, Binca came guns blazing at the Greek. She broke Sakkari’s serve early on the first set and never looked back. She went on to win 6-4, keeping hopes alive.
Andreescu broke the opponent right away in the final set to go up 2-0, but Sakkari quickly replied with a break at love in the following game. Andreescu had an off-court medical timeout after holding service at 3-2 and returned with her upper left leg bandaged. On the resumption, the Greek blasted a service winner and three crisp groundstrokes to hold at 15 and tie the match at 3-3.
With Andreescu physically exhausted, Sakkari used a controlled return game to cut the deficit to 4-3. Sakkari finished up the match with a break, converting on her fourth match point to reach her maiden US Open quarterfinal.
