Nice vs Marseille gets abandoned due to a bizarre incident. Marseille player, Payet was hit by a bottle while taking the corner. This incident led to commotion and abandonment of the game.
A bottle flung by home fans hit Payet in the back as he decided to take a corner. He hit the bottle right at the fans, causing fans to pour onto the pitch as stewards and players struggled to keep them back.
After a lengthy delay, Nice’s players returned to the field to complete the match, but Marseille’s players declined. Nice awarded with a 3-0 victory, as Marseille players refused to continue the game.
According to the French League rules, a 3-0 victory will be awarded to the team in the lead.
Before the infringement of the game, Nice took a 1-0 lead with Dolberg on the scoresheet. Dolberg netted an exquisite ball from Lotomba.
Throughout the game, Marseille players have been targeted by the fans. Plastic water bottles were thrown from one section of the crowd. One collided with Payet, causing the midfielder to fall to the ground.
In the ensuing melee, teammates Alvaro Gonzalez and Matteo Guendouzi ran towards the end of the field to confront the fans. While Nice captain Dante attempted to calm enraged fans.
Stewards attempted to stop the pitch invasion before a brawl broke out between players from both teams, supporters, and staff.
Players and officials eventually made their way off the field and down the tunnel, away from the mess outside.
Unverified photographs of Payet with blood and bruises on his back circulated on social media, while teammates Matteo Guendouzi and Luan Peres were seen with strangle marks on their necks.
Marseille president Pablo Longoria said, “Our players were attacked by the fans of Nice.”
