FC Barcelona defender Emerson Royal is on his way to the North London side this summer. Tottenham Hotspurs and FC Barcelona have reached an agreement on a €30m transfer fee for the Brazilian defender. With a woeful defense last season, Nuno looks to bolster his defense.
Barcelona signed Emerson in the summer of 2019 from Atletico Minero. However, the defender spent two seasons on loan at Real Betis. He helped Betis reach the Europa League last season. During his time with Betis, he has developed into a promising defender. Polishing his game to the extent that he’s a solid option for a more defensive fullback. He is also good in the press, and with smart, solid positioning.
He started the first few games at Barca and is reportedly happy there, but we also know that Barcelona is broke and desperate for funds. That leaves an opening for a club like Tottenham who has a little bit of liquidity and also a need for a new right-back.
With the Ivory Coast defender Serge Aurier now out of favor at Tottenham, Japhet Tanganga started at right-back in the win against Watford on Sunday. Emerson will provide competition for him and Matt Doherty, who played under Nuno at Wolves.
Initially, the Barcelona defender had no interest in joining the Spurs. The club is too not open to their initial offer of including Aurier in the deal. However, the latest offer does not include the Ivorian right-back, with Tottenham set to pay €30 million to Barcelona if they meet the conditions for bonus payments. Meanwhile, Real Betis will also be eligible to receive a sum of €5 million owing to a sell-on clause.
Emerson will spend five years as per his contract. His medicals are scheduled for Tuesday.
