India’s newly appointed T20I captain Rohit Sharma on Tuesday said Virat Kohli will remain an integral part of the T20I team when he returns to the side, saying the former captain is an impact player.
Addressing the pressor on the eve of the T20I series opener against New Zealand,
Rohit stressed that Kohli will only strengthen the team when he returns from the break.
Rohit Sharma replaced Virat Kohli as India’s T20I captain after the latter stepped down from the role,
citing workload management after their early exit from T20 World Cup 2021.
Virat Kohli will not play in the 3-match T20I series against New Zealand as he has been rested for the series.
Kohli will also miss the first of a 2-Test series against the Kiwis and return to captain the side for the 2nd Test.
Virat Kohli has been going through a bad patch in international cricket.
He started off the T20 World Cup with a valiant fifty against Pakistan in Dubai but his form weaned off as he ended the
tournament with mere 68 runs in 3 innings.
However, the former skipper, who will continue to lead the ODI and the Test team, has a stellar T20i record,
having scored more than 3000 runs at an average of over 52.
Rohit said while addressing the press,
“What he has been doing for the team, his role will remain the same.
Virat is an impact player, he leaves an impression whenever he plays.
He is a very important player from the team’s point of view”.
“Everybody will have a different role, batting first and bowling first, roles will be different.
Everyone is open to that.
I am sure when Virat comes back, he can only strengthen our team because of the experience and the kind of batsmen he is.
It’s only going to add up to our squad,” he added.
India faces New Zealand in the first of the 3-match series in Jaipur on November 17. The 2nd and 3rd T20Is will be played in Ranchi and Kolkata respectively on November 19 and 21.
