Rohit Sharma smashed a sensational ton against England on day 3. Rohit Sharma got his promotion as an opener in the batting order. He repaid the favor with an extraordinary knock of 127 runs of 256 balls. In his innings, he grabbed 14 fours and a six.
Rohit Sharma made his debut in 2013. Since then, this was his first overseas test hundred. A reporter asked Rohit what was the plan going into such a match situation. Rohit said, “We knew it is an important second innings for our batting group as we are 100 runs behind after the first innings. So it was important for our batsmen to have a long partnership with one another.”
Rohit goes on to praise the likes of KL Rahul and Pujara saying that they did their job well. Both the batsmen maintained a long partnership. However, he says that the game is very well balanced although the Indian team has a 170 run lead in the match. He also makes an important statement saying that ‘tomorrow is also crucial for us’.
In his early test days, Rohit batted in the middle-order for the Indian team. His numbers weren’t up to the mark. Rohit averaged 39.62 batting between no.3 to no.6. However as an opener, in just 27 innings he grabbed 1462 runs at an average of 58.48, bagging by five centuries.
A reporter asked Rohit about his promotion on top of the batting order. In reply Rohit said, “In the back of my mind, I knew this was my last chance as well trying another position in the batting order. When the offer came to me, I was very much aware of it. There were talks within the management about opening the innings at some stage. Mentally, I was ready to take up the challenge and see how I can do well up the order.”
“I know I batted in the middle order and things didn’t go as per the way I wanted it to and I knew this was my last opportunity to try out and you know management is thinking whatever I want to try,” he added.
Rohit talks about how this could have been his last opportunity and what was at stake. He goes on to add, “When you are playing the sport, you always have to take those chances and you always have to take those risks and so you could say I was ready for it and didn’t come to me as a surprise. You can say it would have been my last opportunity if I wouldn’t have succeeded. Anything could have happened,” Rohit said.
“That was my feeling. I don’t know about others because the team management told me that I will have a long run. But I wanted to think in a way that this is it. I have to make good use of the opportunity and for that, I have to do whatever it takes,” he added.
Rohit tells a reporter how batting overseas is not easy. There are certain conditions that need to be taken care of. Rohit says, “You can’t come and take shots on a pitch like in England. You need to understand certain situations of the game and certain types of bowlers bowling at you. There were certain adjustments that had to be made and I enjoyed it.” Rohit knew that being patient would be a factor. He believed that the results would come if he would remain patient.
However, Rohit wasn’t thinking about an overseas hundred. He was keen on sticking to the process and doing his best to help the team in every way possible. India lead by 171 runs after Day 3 with a score of 270 for 3 wickets.
