Everything Venkatesh Iyer touches turns to gold in the UAE leg of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. The 26-year-old all-rounder did not play for Kolkata Knight Riders during India’s first half of the season. Still, his performances in the UAE have garnered attention.
Venkatesh Iyer delivered with the ball for Kolkata Knight Riders in their crucial game against last year’s finalists Delhi Capitals, after taking opposition bowlers to the cleaners with his impressive effort with the bat in the UAE.
On a sluggish pitch in Sharjah, Iyer bowled medium-pace and gave up 29 runs while picking up two crucial wickets. He took wickets of Shimron Hetmyer and Axar Patel as it reduced DC to 127/9 in 20 overs.
As Delhi batters struggled to smash boundaries against the medium-pacer, Venkatesh Iyer nailed his yorkers. Eoin Morgan gave Iyer all four overs, and the opener reacted by delivering them with precision and intensity.
KKR did not miss Andre Russell with the ball, as Iyer chipped in well after KKR elected to rest Russell, who appeared to have picked up an injury in their previous game.
“Felt good with the ball. I always had the confidence that I could deliver with the ball and I do practice the yorker a lot. I practice with my bowling coach Anand Rajan. For me, it’s about accuracy and bowling to my field. As long as my execution is current, I am extremely satisfied,” Venkatesh Iyer said.
Iyer struggled with timing with the bat, but he still managed to score 14 runs. KKR beat DC by 3 wickets because of Sunil Narine’s all-around performance and a handful of 30s from Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana. After chasing down the goal in just 18.2 overs, KKR remained in fourth place on the points table.
Iyer has already scored 126 runs in four matches for KKR in the IPL 2021, with a strike rate above 140, providing Eoin Morgan’s side with much-needed aggressive intent at the top. The former champs have an excellent prospect in hand as his bowling improves.
