Senior BJP leader Uma Bharti has made some controversial remarks on bureaucracy saying that officials are around only “to pick up our slippers” and have “no standing (aukat)”.
A video of Uma Bharti’s statement is getting viral on social media on Monday.
The former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister and ex-Union Minister said that “Bureaucracy is nothing. Bureaucracy is there to pick up chappals (slippers). It picks up our slippers. We only allow that.”

Uma said that she has been a minister in the central government for 11 years, was the chief minister as well. It is all nonsense that bureaucracy control leaders. The real thing is that we do our politics under the pretext of bureaucracy.
“You think bureaucrats control politicians? No. First, there are discussions in private and then the bureaucracy prepares a file and gets it. Ask me – for 11 years I have been Union Minister and chief minister,” said the politician.
“First we have a discussion and then the file is processed. It’s all nonsense that bureaucracy controls the politicians. They can’t… what is their standing? We are giving them a salary, we are giving them postings, we are giving them promotions and demotion – what can they do? The truth is we use them for our politics,” she added.
Uma Bharti was meeting the delegation of OBC Mahasabha at her home in Bhopal. The delegation handed over her a memorandum regarding OBC reservation in the Private sector.
The group reportedly raised their demand for a caste-based census and quota in private jobs and threatened protests if the Madhya Pradesh BJP government did not decide quickly.
Opposition demands a clarification
The opposition Congress called the comments shameful and demanded clarification.
“Will Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan clarify whether bureaucrats actually pick up slippers of politicians,” Congress leader KK Mishra demanded.
People on social media are criticizing Uma Bharti for her shameful remarks.
Uma Bharti is currently appointed as the Cabinet Minister for Drinking Water & Sanitation in the Union Government of India. She is a BJP Member of Parliament from the Jhansi (Uttar Pradesh) constituency.
