Prime minister Narendra Modi approved the setting up of 157 new medical colleges. This will increase the seats for medical students. The aim is to ensure affordable treatment for everyone. This is a part of the PM Ayushman Bharat health infrastructure mission. Regarding the same, Union Health Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya held a press conference today.
Further, for severe diseases like cancer and diabetes, the center will set up 1,50,000 health and wellness centers. Most importantly, it will include check-up centers at the primary level. In the same vein, the center has inaugurated more than 79000 wellness centers in the country.

Mansukh Mandaviya on vaccination for children
Mansukh Mandaviya has given a clearance that ZyCov-D pricing is under discussion. The Center will soon launch the vaccine in the country.
Further, he talked about the new COVID variant that is steadily catching up with many people. Mansukh Mandaviya said a team is investigating the new COVID variant AY.4.2. Organizations like ICMR and NCDC teams are studying the different variants of COVID-19.
Meanwhile, regarding the approval to Covaxin Mandaviya stated, “WHO has a system in which there is a technical committee which has approved it (Covaxin) while the other committee is meeting today. The approval for Covaxin will be given on the basis of today’s meeting”.
Three aspects of the Ayushman Bharat mission
According to the Prime Minister, there are major 3 aspects of the Ayushman Bharat Mission to fulfill the gaps in the health sector of India.
Firstly, creating convenient facilities for diagnosis of health issues with their proper treatment. Regarding this, the center is planning to open health and wellness centers in rural areas of the country. This will ensure early diagnosis of the diseases.
Secondly, improving the testing network for the diagnosis of the diseases. The government is aiming for integrated lab facilities covering 730 districts. Regarding this, Additional Secy & Mission Director, National Health Mission on health infra mission, Vikas Sheel addressed the conference. As a result, he said, “15 new bio-safety Level III laboratories to be operationalized and 4 new regional National Institutes of Virology to be operationalized. A new National Institution for ‘One Health'”.
Lastly, according to the PM, was the expansion of existing research institutions that study pandemics.
