The nation is celebrating Constitution Day on Nov 26, today. It is to commemorate the adoption of the Constitution of India by the Constituent Assembly in 1949. In addition, another name for Constitution day is ‘Samvidhan Divas‘.
On November 26, 1949, the Constitution came into existence and it came into effect on January 26, 1950. The government has confirmed the date of Constitution Day by a gazette notification. Narendra Modi, the Prime Minister of India made the declaration on 11 October 2015 while laying the foundation stone of the B.R Ambedkar’s Statue of Equality memorial in Mumbai.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid tributes to the BR Ambedkar. Amit Shah and various other ministers also recognize the day.

Dr. Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar became the first law minister of India in the Congress-led Centre. Furthermore, He was appointed as the chairman of the constitution drafting committee in 1947 and was given the responsibility of writing the country’s new constitution.
The drafted Samvidhan by Ambedkar was described as ‘first and foremost a social document’.

Constitution Day is not a public holiday
Initially, it was only celebrated by the various departments of the Government of India. As per the Department of Education and Literacy, the preamble of the Samvidhan was read in all schools by all students. There are so many activities related to ‘Constitution day’ such as the quiz and essay competitions both ways online and offline. Moreover, students of higher education have arranged mock parliamentary debates in college.
Background of this Day
In 2015, the day was the 125th birth anniversary year of B. R Ambedkar (14 April 1891 – 6 December 1956). He was known as the father of the Samvidhan. The prime minister of India Narendra Modi announced that 26 November will be celebrated as ‘Constitution Day’. In November 2015, the government officially announced the celebration of the day.
BR Ambedkar said that a good constitution can become bad if the people implement it badly. While a bad constitution can become good if it is implemented effectively.
