Brazil’s extreme right-wing President, Jair Bolsonaro recently released a few statements regarding his future term.
Bolsonaro, who is running for his second term as President, says that he sees three future possibilities. He will either win the 2022 Presidential election, die or land in jail.
However, he also added that there was no chance of prison because “no man on Earth will threaten me”.
The 66-year-old serving president has been trailing left-wing former President Luis Inacio Lula da Silva in the polls. According to several polls, Bolsonaro’s approval rating is the worst out of all past Brazillian Presidents.
His government’s disastrous management of the Covid 19 pandemic has also added to his disapproval reasons. The coronavirus has killed more than half a million people in Brazil. The country is still reeling from the effects of high inflation, hunger, and unemployment.
On Friday, 150 indigenous people protested in front of his presidential palace ahead of a key supreme court ruling on their ancestral lands.
The protests came after the President rolled back the rights of the indigenous communities, citing an agricultural block.
Jair Bolsonaro has claimed of EVMs being rigged
The former military officer has been questioning Brazil’s electronic voting system, he has even threatened to not accept the results of next year’s presidential elections.
He has been calling for the adoption of printed receipts. Electronic voting systems are vulnerable to all kinds of fraud, he added.
Earlier this week, the head of Brazil’s electoral court insisted there was no problem with the voting system.
However, Bolsonaro met with some Christian leaders on Saturday and has been refusing to back down on his criticism of the EVM. He urged the evangelical leaders to join planned nationwide demonstrations on 7 September in support of him.
The right-wing leader’s remarks against the election system have caused great tension between him and the country’s judiciary and election authorities.
